A spoiled son of a wealthy businessman is swept from the deck of a transatlantic steamship on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and given up as claimed by the sea by those aboard. Harvey Cheyne has not only been swept off the steamship, he is carried away from the plush modern life he has known his entire 15 years of life and into the hard and unforgiving life at sea of cod fishermen.
Harvey’s defiant demanding manner is quickly snuffed when the Captain knocks him to the ground with a bloody nose. And so begins Harvey’s transformation from a bored, self-absorbed adolescent to a serious, useful member of the crew of the “We’re Here”. The fishermen’s life of prolonged hard work and frequent punishment toughens Harvey physically. The captain’s son, Dan, befriends Harvey and teaches him the ways of the boat. Of all the crew only Dan and the cook believe that Harvey is who he says he is. Life is grim and dark as Harvey struggles to adapt to his new environment and duties. The wild mixture of Christianity and paganism that are reflected in the superstitions of the crew are as foreign to him as the terms used for the parts of the ship and the tasks to be done.
Through Kipling’s tremendous descriptive abilities young readers can get a true sense of what Harvey has and is looking at whether it is a gathering of the fishing schooners to create a floating community or the looks, sounds and feel of the open sea in the moonlight.
